‘Chil en’s sy m’

No one gave you a satisfying answer, on the ride to your new home – your new workplace. A boarding school, government-funded and just barely squeaking by on charity donations. You hadn’t the faintest idea what to expect, when they’d called you for that interview and explained that it was a different sort of facility. Very remote, very rundown.

You’d be doing a lot of good there. Now you can see why – never have you seen a building so dilapidated and dirty – so dead. The only greenery is the ivy digging into the outer walls; the sparse trees in the courtyard don’t appear to have produced a single leaf in years, sucking nothing into their roots through packed-down, dry earth.

There are swingsets. Slides.

The children must all be inside. It makes sense. It’s evening.

You are Russell Edgley. Teacher, charity worker, and – after having walked the half-mile from the bus stop to the boarding school with all your belongings in a single duffel bag – dead on your feet.

What would you like to do?

> Head to the main office.

You weren’t given a key, but to your relief, you don’t need one – the front door is unlocked, hinges crying as you gently push it open.

The foyer is barren. You think there ought to be coats or shoes, or at least a welcome mat…but all it seems to be is an empty space, a hallway before you and to your right. The twisting staircase also before you is probably the sturdiest thing you’ve seen of the building, so far.

No one gave you directions…

Which way will you go?

The hallway seems inexhaustibly long. It’s unfair, given how much weight you’re carrying in clothing, alone, but you push past the staircase and check the plaques on each of the closed doors you pass. Some are too tarnished to read, but you can make out some of the letters:

‘Clas r om ’

‘Th r ’

‘C assroom 2’

There is another door – unmarked – across from one reading ‘Basement’. None of those letters are faded. Finally, at the very end of the hall, the plaque on the last door reads ‘Head office’. There is a key in the lock.

>Well, if they were nice enough to give you a way in to the office, I see no reason why we should ignore their kindness... But perhaps we should put our non-essential items somewhere where they will be safe (and not encumbering us anymore). Let's check and see if any of the classrooms are unlocked.

You try to open the door to Classroom 2.

It’s locked.

You backtrack a little to test the door to – what you can only assume – is Classroom 1.

It isn’t locked…but for some reason, the door seems to be stuck. It won’t open more than an inch. It feels like someone’s barricaded it…

Well that's perfectly normal and not disturbing at all. Let's test the basement door.

>Well that's perfectly normal and not disturbing at all. Let's test the basement door.

You lug your duffel bag back down the hall. You’re starting to get one hell of a backache, which is not in the least aided by the fact that every step you take makes it tap your shoulder blades, again and again. You lower it so you aren’t carrying it over your shoulder, but now your arms are starting to ache, too.

Testing the doorknob, you find that the basement door is unlocked…but the staircase is ridiculously steep, as far down as you can tell.

That isn’t very far. It’s pitch-black down there. If you want to go down the stairs, you’d best find a flashlight or something first.

Madness isn't a state of mind.
The city devours the land, the people devour the city
Madness is a place.
Mists of dreams drip along the nascent echo and love no more
Let's go there.
All this has happened before, and will happen again
Shall we?
End of line

> Seek out the next door down the hall and check if it's open.

The only other doors are the unmarked one, the one with the nigh-unreadable plaque bearing the letters ‘Thr’, and the main office door.

The unmarked one is closest.

Closing the basement door, you turn around and place your hand on the chipped-silver door handle, which is cold to the touch – colder than everything else, as though this door has somehow been neglected. You don’t think on that long, though; you pull it open.

And promptly drop the duffel bag and stumble backwards as a gnarled green face lunges at you.

You blink. You’ve fallen – rather hard – on the floor…and all that came out after you were a few brooms, which clatter to the ground. That face is gone.

…Did you just imagine that?

> Gather our composure, look around cautiously, and then if everything looks safe, try the office door.

It had to have been a trick of the light. The lightbulbs cast a dim, sickly yellow glow over the hallway – you’re not accustomed to the darkness, quite yet, and there’s an air about this place that’s sort of-…

Unusual.

Taking a deep breath, you manage to shake off the effects of your overactive imagination and take a quick glance down the corridor. It’s as empty as it always has been, from the moment you set foot in the building. Aren’t the children around anywhere…? They can’t possibly all be in bed.

Best to focus on the office. You can worry about the silence later.

You turn the key to unlock the door and open it. The office is as typical as you’d expected it to be, and a great deal more welcoming; the curtains are drawn back to reveal a brilliant pink-streaked sunset, there’s a full set of keys on the desk, a tall-backed and inviting looking chair, a computer –

A computer that looks as though it hasn’t been dusted off for quite some time.

No one is in here. What would you like to do?

Oh god nothing has ever felt so good. You relieve yourself of the bag, putting it down just inside the doorway, and start to explore the office.

There isn’t much out of the ordinary, here. Inside the desk drawers are some basic supplies: a stapler, a few pens, a blank notepad, a letter opener. The other one only contains stationary.
