That might not be her last name! >_> I can't remember.

Ellen "Duchess" Varangi, played by Cadet queenofinsanity6 and voiced by Squeek and written by me, is a twenty-eight-year-old female who is Liquid Len's colleague. She's always very excited about everything. ..we don't know much else about her. xD

She was named for the Genesis Duke suite's "Duchess," about a woman who becomes a famous diva-- and falls into a depressingly creepy mental state once her fame wanes. I also named her that because I love calling girls titles of respect. xD Her last name is based on the word for "sword men" in Nordic history. Named because that's awesome. I love girls a little too much.

We don't know much about her, but that's what this thread is for!

Jane and I figured out a bit more information about Ellen.

- She's twenty-eight. ..roughly.

- She's definitely an insomniac, for her dreams scare her.

- Whatmore, her dreams actually form a 'mythos' of their own-- we're going recursive here. For now, we can discuss the contents of this dream mythos here, but if necessary I can create a new thread for it.

- Keeping in the theme of Between the Buried and Me's "Fossil Genera (A Feed from Cloud Mountain)," something discusses Ellen's future as she sleeps. For most of the story, we want this to be hinted at but always vague. Sounds like something The Rake would do.

To reiterate, Ellen has trouble sleeping, but whenever she does sleep, something somewhere discusses her future in some way.

I love this idea. Basically because I love going recursive (or having self-fulfilling loops).

As for the dreams - we did have a Fear idea before called the Gargoyle (though I preferred the name "the Grotesque") which would only manifest in dreams. Perhaps we could use that? Or would introducing a new Fear be too much?

I want to know more about The Grotesque. Nice choice of name, by the way, since gargoyles are the ones that spit water and grotesques are just statues.

This is what Yosh had about him before:
QUOTE
The Gargoyle is a being that resides in the dreams of every single living person on the planet. Whenever you nod off for the briefest second, you are victim to his scrutiny. Mostly he observes dreamers from afar, weighing their usefulness to him in his ultimate goal. He wants out. He wants to be free of his entrapment in the dreams of humanity, to reign over the world and spread his great wings infinitely across the sky. Most of humanity remains oblivious to him, dismissing him as a shadowy figment of their dreams, but still he watches. Every time you fall asleep, you are at his mercy, and should he choose you to aid him, or if he simply just deems it so, you will never wake again, forever trapped in a void of your own mind. He represents the fear of dreams, of nightmares, of the horrors, within, of the disturbing implications of what they could mean, of the helplessness of knowing that he could claim you at any moment, that no matter what you do, everyone must sleep.

Now, there are a lot of things I like about this - it residing in the minds of every dreamer is a very cool and very scary thing. Probably parts of this are like the Rake (who has been called the "Lord of Nightmares" - but for him, it's more about whispering during sleep, rather than controlling dreams), but I do think it could be a very interesting Fear to have.

I don't like the "it can trap any dreamer it wants" because that takes away any suspense - perhaps it needs to make you do something before it traps you, but if it can trap anyone (and everyone does sleep) there's no suspense on trying to escape it.

There was another idea I had, too: the more you try to look at it in your dreams, the more out of focus it is. The only way you can actually see it is by not looking at it, by only glimpsing it out of the corner of your eye.

And yeah, that's why I chose "Grotesque" (plus, it means "bizarre or fantastic").

What if.. he cannot trap you? I have some ideas.

- The Grotesque resides only in Ellen's dreams, but it's kept very secret for a while. Usually only hinted at as "the beast of my dreams."

- The Grotesque wants out, but the only way for it to get out would be for (Ellen to go into a coma, dreaming for a long enough time for it to have the chance?) (The Genera higher-ups to operate on Ellen and surgically remove The Grotesque from her [through brain surgery]?) (BOTH? o__o)

- This aspect of The Grotesque, the "wants out" part, does not represent any of its Fear parts, instead representing one of the biggest themes of Topography Genera: The fear of the future. We have The Manufactured Newborn coming closer and closer (Doctor Cloud), we have EAT invading the internet and trying to reach the ocean and evolving more and more (Liquid Len), so what if we have The Grotesque trying to go out into the physical world (Duchess)?

This "fear of the future" motif also applies to something you brought up regarding the lyrics to "Fossil Genera:" That there are multiple apocalypses and each group is trying to bring about their own.

- Finally, what happens when The Grotesque is free is left up to the reader (maybe with some cryptic imagery thrown in like "I WILL BE FREE TO RULE THE SKY TOWER" or something), and there will be hints that The Grotesque exists in all of us but it will not be focused on.

I love all of those ideas. (Except perhaps for the brain surgery - can you surgically remove a dream? I don't think so.) (Now if they tried to do some weird psychic surgery on her, that might work.)

Yeah, that was the only part I wasn't sure about. I find the idea of The Grotesque trying to escape from a dream to be cheesy, as I have a firm belief that dreams are just imagination, not real at all. But I'm trying to think of how one might possibly get The Grotesque out.

..maybe it's actually bacteria lodged in your brain that only affects your dreams. And the Genera would try to surgically remove it, but once it's out, it grows into a proper thing?

Dreams are just memories and imagination. But they are all caused by your brain - specifically, neurons in your brain stem which release neurotransmitters during REM sleep.

So perhaps the Grotesque first appears as a single neuron and then grows. I mean, seriously, doesn't that look eldritch?

That's outright terrifying. Human anatomy is legitimately one of the few things out there to scare me to the point of wanting to throw up. o_e I couldn't even watch Inner Space without just.. running out of the room. And that's a comedy. ..which may have been one of the reasons I hated it so much! I can't stand playing things I'm afraid of for laughs.

..but yeah, no, that's a great idea. While glancing at that picture before wanting to cry, I thought of the idea of Doctor Cloud and Duchess working together for a bit, of Duchess coming to Cloud to ask for help with her dreams, and he discovers something alarming about her or something and publishes reports on The Supernatural Anaesthetist. It might be how Duchess' story arc begins, and it'd certainly be a really cool way to show how the characters interact with each other.

Do you want me to start the Duchess dream story arc right now? Or do we want to wait for Jane to make a post about going to Doctor Cloud for a checkup? (I was thinking about having Cloud do physicals on all personnel after the HOMUNCULI incident and then coming across Duchess's problem).

I'd say give her a time limit of sorts. She's still really busy with life.

Just start giving check-ups on employees, make up some if you have to, and we'll give her.. a week. Then you can just give her a check-up.

Done.

I said we would be going alphabetically via last name - so since Varangi is quite close to the end of the alphabet, we should be good.

Common motifs in Duchess' dreams:

A unified force (kingdom, country, team) with good intentions and some cynical malevolent influences. This is the Genera.

A figure who fades in and out of her dreams, who comforts her and helps her when around. This is Liquid Len (fading in and out because she fades in and out of sleep).

A figure who fades in and out of her dreams, a sort of father figure who is strict and takes her to the hospital when she's hurt but shows no affection. This is Doctor Cloud.

A figure who resides in every reflection, a sort of mother figure who gives her advice and is what she wants to be. This is.. well, it's who she wants to be. But canonically, this is herself. (There's parental motifs with the protagonists in her dreams, basically)

A peaceful lake, free from the unified force and all other distractions, where Duchess wishes she always was. This element of her dreams was planted by EAT, since I imagine most of the Genera has thoughts like this if EAT's in the Genera.

Mentions of a "castle," representing FT-HOMUNCULI's tower.

Mentions of a race called "the Ends Race," representing the Fossils' race to bring their own apocalypses.

Any shrines or religious motifs would be FT-HADES.

Any games or toys child-like motifs would be FT-SELKIE.

There would be areas in Duchess' dreams which are completely silent and in black-and-white (the areas, that is; she'd still be in colour). This represents FT-CREMATOR. Any people she meets in these areas are either black-and-white and completely silent/comatose or in colour like her and afraid.

The Grotesque in Duchess' dreams:

The Grotesque would have multiple forms, but it would always be linked by a common motif: I was thinking this would actually be fire. The only surefire way to tell if The Grotesque is nearby is if fire is anywhere in Duchess' dream. For the carnival, The Grotesque would plant fire-breathers and/or fire hoops. The fire, of course, wouldn't actually necessarily be The Grotesque; that's just its tell.

Plus, this continues this sort of absurd Topography Genera/OH GOD THE RAPTURE IS BURNING parallel theory I have going on. In Rapture, The Reverie is represented by a motif of water.

Arc Phrases in Duchess' dreams:

Between the Buried and Me lyrics: "Follow the straight line," "The drifting drifter, look into the picture," "Close one eye, step to the side," "Don't think, don't speak, I will do this for you," "You are now dead, and I soon will be," "Your world is shit, and I have proved this with my followers," "Trust us, for tonight we become a higher being," "My eyes are slowly closing," "I'm floating towards the sun of nothing, floating farther away," "Mirror stares back again, I contort like the wheels in my head. Still nothing ever happens, please wake up," "I open my eyes to the smell of morning skin, soft touch of your hair, your breath I breathe in," "Walking into a certain state of suffocation," "I'm my own planet," and.. god, a lot of awesome cryptic lyrics.

Then there can easily be made-up Arc Phrases but I don't feel like making any at the moment. xD
