So I started up Tale of the Lost Vikings, and I don't know how obvious it is that it's a part of the main Topography Genera story, but I don't mind if people figure it out. You can make a runner blog as well if you want, entirely up to you, I don't mind if you don't. But let me start figuring out the lingo.

The Glass Prison (and Prisoners) refers to the compulsion to blog one's thoughts. If Runners know you're a blogger, that means they know you're probably gonna have interesting (read: bad) things happen to you because law of conservation of detail. So Runners cast Prisoners as outcasts. Of course, Prisoners can lie and say they're not Prisoners, but there's a lot of deception with Runners anyway.

Willow Farm is the entire Topography Genera. It refers to all the facilities, the organization itself. Willow Farm is the fifth movement of "Supper's Ready" and it's about a farm where basically people are changed into bizarre things ("There's Winston Churchill dressed in drag! He used to be a British flag, plastic bag, what a drag!" "The frog was a prince! The prince was a brick, the brick was an egg, the egg was a bird! Fly away, you sweet little thing, haven't you heard? We're going to change you into a human being!" and such), so it fit here. Farmers are Genera people. Hell's Kitchen is Fossil Research, where Genera scientists use captured Runners as test subjects.

So obviously, the Genera is rather feared and hated by Runners. They know the Genera checks their blogs, which is why they use the lingo in the first place.

"Scarecrow" is a complete fabrication. Specifically, he was a Camper. >W> EAT made a Runner that became the "head" of the Runners, basically, and then it had the Genera take Scarecrow, "cutting off the head of the snake." Inside operation, get it? Scarecrow had influenced so much of their culture, coming up with the "Code of Abacab" (which is something I would actually love to write, a code of conduct, "How to Be a Runner"), standing up against Fossils (read: the Fossils were in on it too because EAT), and becoming worshipped by these Runners. And very few suspected that Scarecrow was a Camper, because Scarecrow also spread this idea that Camper are all really stupid things that aren't worth worrying about (this was a delusion mentioned in Administry for a Cause).

So there, now you know! :D

My plan for the blog is for the Lost Viking to eventually become captured and taken to Hell's Kitchen, where we'd have that reveal of the Genera testing on Runners and stuff. But for now, there'll just be a lot of audience interaction, fleshing out this Runner culture.

I realized it when I saw that you were using all the Genera code names.

I think the entire lingo thing is really interesting and actually reminds me of The Book of Cant. In fact, do you want me to include some of the lingo in the Book of Cant?

You've already got a Runner's blog, so I don't want to do the same for my section. But perhaps a version of the proxyblog -- ooh, a blog for one of the Lilim. I just have to think of a good name for the Genera version of the Lilim.

I'd say "Lamia" could work for that. If you liked. And yeah, sure, feel free to include lingo in there. Just not anything directly Genera-related yet. Maybe "Code of Abacab" when I get around to actually writing that. Or "Glass Prison," that would be fine!

The Code of Abacab (Est. 2011, Scarecrow)

Overview: The subjects on the run from entities of questionable physics (hereby referred to as "Fossils") will find it in their best interests to keep a universal etiquette. Remember, we're all in this together. We're all running from different Fossils, but we're all running, all the same.

i- Subjects should maintain mutual respect. Keep the golden rule in mind at all times: Do unto others as you'd have done unto yourself. That's really all there is to it.

ii- Subjects should respect the deceased in accordance to personal background, even to those under the influence of Fossils. For absent friends, not in the presence of enemies. The dead are the dead, respect that. Yes, even to proxies and Fossil-subs.

iii- Subjects should not approach those under the influence of Fossils unless explicitly provoked. For reasons that should be obvious, unless the proxy is charging at you or a friend, you should try to leave them be. You don't want to be on the run from even more Fossils.

iv- If suitable shelter and/or sustenance is discovered, subjects should check for and respect boundaries. If you find a house or food or something that looks like it's all yours, first check for nearby people or even graffiti signs or anything that might mark the discovery. Don't just steal the stuff. This isn't for the sake of being nice; this is all for the sake of keeping yourself out of trouble. But if there's no sign of other people, have at it.

v- Subjects should, for sake of clarity, avoid using graffiti for sake of gang symbols. Graffiti is a means of communication. Write words, or leave a symbol representing shelter or Fossils. Don't use it for petty gangs, or else you'll cause confusion and people will think it's a new type of Fossil.

vi- Subjects should respect territorial laws. Just because you're on the run doesn't mean everyone around you is. If there's police officers, do your best to respect them. If there's laws against, say, squatting in abandoned houses, then you shouldn't use that house as shelter.

vii- Subjects should take caution at all times. Respect your peers, but also be afraid of strangers. Be smart, careful when hitchhiking, keep a weapon on you and know self-defense. Try to develop an understanding of all the Fossils so you know what to be on the lookout for.

viii- Subjects should avoid online interaction. Blogging lets the whole world about your location, and there's an awful lot of blogs from different cultures with different customs and interpretations of Fossils. You want to avoid confusion, so use only the knowledge you acquire with your own eyes and ears.

This is, of course, just a rough draft. If you have any addendums or corrections or anything I might have missed that I should put on there, feel free to share it. And yes, avoiding blogging is supposed to be implied to be more important than caution. EAT made this code, ergo EAT has her own malevolent intentions.

Do you want me to post the whole thing to the Book of Cant? I've done "Prisoner" so far and I'm thinking about doing some more, but generally the definitions are short.

Love it. "It is unknown where the name originates" was a nice touch.

OOG, the name originates from Genesis' song "Abacab." The lyrics are about being made into a scapegoat, but the name.. well, where it comes from has many rumours as well. One is that the chord progression of the song is A B A C A B, one is that it was the song structure in a beta stage, and one is that Genesis wanted a surrealist word to go with their surrealist artwork, to prove that this album wasn't going to be like their previous ones.

I picked it for this because I wanted a name that sounded almost Biblical but actually had no meaning while still being a prog reference. And that fit the bill perfectly. "The Code of Abacab" sounds really awesome.

EDIT: Plus, it implies that EAT doesn't really care about the Runners, so it used a meaningless word.

Yeah, I figured it was a reference to the song, but I couldn't figure out why the runners would name it like that. In my headcanon, it's because the original version was written on a discarded album - which happened to be Abacab.

The general rule of thumb with Topography Genera is "If it's a prog reference, it's a part of the great EAT conspiracy." Though "Abacab" isn't the most progressive of songs. But Scarecrow (name taken from Between the Buried and Me's "Desert of Song") is a Camper, and he came up with the code, ergo he gave it a prog name.

Hell, the Lost Viking isn't a Camper simply because his name comes from Dethklok's "The Lost Vikings." I named him after a parody song, I'm proud of that. xD

Y'know what, fuck it, since these are both related to Runner culture, I'm gonna post the lyrics. Who knows, it might come in handy.

"The Lost Vikings," Dethklok (may cause narm for the character's coolness)

QUOTE
Riding, and riding, we search across the land
The snow, and wind, has frozen hearts of man
But we ride
We ride

Many days ago we left our homes
With swords to ride into the night
Fighting side by side to destroy our foes
And leave them without life

We stop, consider the land that we travelled
Our map's at home, direction unravelled
But we ride
We ride

Many days ago we left our homes
With swords to ride into the night
Fighting side by side to destroy our foes
And leave them without life

So much time has passed since we left our land
That we've become concerned
And we'll never find the battle
That we should have fought and won

But we won't stop searching

Lost but still we ride
Search until we die

We ride
We ride

Hungry and tired the frigid plain yeilds little
We trudge on further, eating pride and snow that's brittle

We ride
We ride

We come upon a witch who takes us in
To let us share her mighty fire
She asks of us our story and we lie and say
We ride around for hire
She asks us if we'd like to have her map
And points us in some direction
But we are far too proud and strong so we keep silent
And ignore her suggestion

Lost but still we ride
Search until we die
All the fault of pride
The gods weep in the night

Lost but still we ride
Search until we die
All the fault of pride
The gods weep in the night

We ride
We ride

"Desert of Song," Between the Buried and Me (considerably more cryptic! :D)

QUOTE
The Radios stopped tuning.
The static is forbidden.
The chords quit strumming...
But we found our new home.

It will rain (falls so slow)
It will rain down here.

The drums quit thumping.
These tones are forbidden.
The throat can't stop singing...
The scarecrow is watching.
It will rain (falls so slow)
It will rain down here.

Here, we're awake in the desert of song.
The silence is broken.
Here, we're awake and the silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Here...we...sing...
Sing with the fear.

Fear: the control tower,
The new sun comes by the hour.
Ghosts slowly disappear in the fog...
Silence: the suffering.
We've built back the age-old sound of song.
Here...we...sing...
Sing with the fear.

Here, we're awake in the desert of song.
The silence is broken.
Here, we're awake and the silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Here...we...sing...
Sing with the fear.

There, I'm done.

Proserpine is named after the Hymn to Proserpine, which is basically a poem from the perspective of a pagan lamenting the rise of Christianity ("Thou hast conquered, O pale Galilean;" = the pale Galilean is Jesus) and how all the old gods are now dead. It has awesome passages like this:
QUOTE
Time and the Gods are at strife; ye dwell in the midst thereof,

and
QUOTE
O ghastly glories of saints, dead limbs of gibbeted Gods !

I figured that could be a metaphor about the battle between the "Night Owls" (the old Fossils - EAT and Passacaglia and Hades) and the newer Fossils (the Newborn and the Mother) who each want to bring about their own apocalypse, with the Genera caught in the middle.

I love all this goddamn work and symbolism, my god. Love every bit of it. Part of the fun of writing this story is wondering where the hell we're gonna go next just with awesome names, alone. >w<

I tell ya, man. We're in a renaissance of writing here. Imagine if the Fear Mythos ever got big enough and then, years down the line, people looked back on our stories as true classics. True classics of the internet era.

Also, in your Book of Cant update, where'd you get "Gatherer?" The word I used was "Farmer," because of Willow Farm. Unless Gatherer is the word to be used in general and Farmer is just a Genera-exclusive one.

Actually, I got "Gatherer" from Love's storyline back in the day. It was pretty much a plan to make people paranoid. Her blog revealed that she was a Gatherer for the Lonely Hearts, but I don't think anyone else was revealed to be Gatherers.

And I'll include the "Farmer" name as well.
