I only just remembered this part of the forum existed, because I'm clearly observant and clever.

I figure, I may as well put this in here...

I was reluctant to write anything featuring a 'new Fear', but after throwing around ideas in my head, I concluded that the best way to go about it was to write what I know and have that be the central conflict, instead of what is now currently the sort of...side-characters in my City of Sinopia blog.

Thus, I introduce Red. The fear of sexuality/sex.

That's almost a spoiler, but hey, if you've read it at all it's probably started to become obvious.

The real form of Red is a thick crimson being, obviously representing blood. It preys on sexual deviancy and the like; blood and sex keep her alive. Red requires a vessel in order to feed, and can pass through vessels much the same way STIs are transmitted. Red frequently takes over her host to ‘feed’ – during that time the vessel will be dormant and will not remember what happened while Red was active. Red prefers a female vessel, since society has made it easier for a female to feed than a male.

Obviously, the 'red' theme comes from everything the colour symbolises. Passion, blood, sex, life, death - the things Red requires to feed and spread, essentially.

Her proxies are the Scarlet-marked; anyone who is considered a sexual deviant, either by themselves or by others. Shame in it makes them especially susceptible; hence the posts that are by the more loyal/fanatic of the Scarlet-marked tend to sound particularly submissive. They experience painful nosebleeds whenever Red is near – they bleed for her to make her stronger and show tribute, from the nose specifically due to the token Japanese connotations (a nosebleed when aroused). The Scarlet-marked show tribute via orgies and ritual sacrifice – it is not uncommon for them to kill each other mid-coitus.

A step above the regular Scarlet-marked proxies are her Blood vessels (pun!). She can have more than one at any time, and thus be in multiple places at once. They feed the same way, and when tributes are made they all collectively feel the effects, but they do not experience any kind of hive-mind. A Blood vessel tends to take on the flavour of the host's personality, amplified by Red. Not all Blood vessels know they are vessels.

...I don't know how much of this applies as a spoiler for City of Sinopia...

Which, incidentally - Sinopia is apparently a shade of red. Hence, another pun.

Truly, I am a wordsmith.

Oh, very cool.

I like all these aspects. There are only two problems I can foresee:

1. Body-hopping and association with the color red could confuse some other readers, since both of those were also associated with Redlight. Now, reading deeper will show that both Red and Redlight are obviously different, but readers of regular Slenderblogs may not understand when first reading it.

2. The name: Red. I like that more as a nickname, rather than the actual name of the Fear. I don't know why, it just seems more nickname-y - and isn't very intimidating. (No offense.)

Actually, I was thinking of "Red Cap." Because Little Red Cap was the original name for Little Red Riding Hood.

Oh, and a Redcap is a type of murderous elf or fairy.

Yeah, Red is better as a slang name, I think - like Slendy, Smiley, etc...

That's the only thing I haven't been able to pin down to my liking, really. The name. Plus, 'Red' is more what the City of Sinopia protagonist goes by, rather than the name of the Fear.

I like that, but I feel like it'd be more of a Scarlet-marked thing.

Plus, not all of Red's vessels are female...the being itself, I see as being more genderless...

Also (talking with Vis in Skype) he sees similarities to the Dying Man, with the body-surfing and decay aspects. What are thoughts on that?

I don't see Red as 'body-surfing' so much as being closer to one giant being, spread across several bodies - each one thinks independently, so it's almost like there are several of Red. Not all of them might even get along, and want to kill each other; all they have in common in their goals and hunger.

However, the amnesiac thing is a strong parallel - I thought it important to the Fear because of roofies, but what do others think?

Also, not sure on the decay aspect... If you read this, Vis, please clarify further!

Unless you mean the hedonistic-cult thing, but I want to fully understand the comparison.

Okay further discussing has led to this, and I'm kind of loving it:

(If any of you can summarise this better, please do.)

The similarities to the Dying Man are there because she is a strong piece of said Eldritch abomination - to quote Vis, 'Red is what's left of the mind of the original dying man'. In essence, Red is the mother of all the Dying Man shards in existence.

A.K.A I am Cute's mother via Grey. Canon'd.

Ooh, I like that.

She's what became of the original Dying Man piece. That solves neatly the "bodysurfing" aspect and the parallels with the Dying Man - although she doesn't have the decay aspect, I think. She can move between bodies without those bodies dying.

We decided she kind of warped herself - going on the Dying Man's theme of self-destruction, she managed to sort of concentrate that aspect into sexual self-destruction.

I still think we can relate it to "Little Red Riding Hood" or "Red Cap" or "Little Red Hat." Especially because the story itself could be a metaphor for sexual awakening.

My favorite version of the story, an Italian/Austrian version called Little Red Hat:
QUOTE

Once there was an old woman who had a granddaughter named Little Red Hat. One day they were both in the field when the old woman said, "I am going home now. You come along later and bring me some soup."
After a while Little Red Hat set out for her grandmother's house, and she met an ogre, who said, "Hello, my dear Little Red Hat. Where are you going?"

"I am going to my grandmother's to take her some soup."

"Good," he replied, "I'll come along too. Are you going across the stones or the thorns?"

"I'm going across the stones," said the girl.

"Then I'll go across the thorns," replied the ogre.

They left. But on the way Little Red Hat came to a meadow where beautiful flowers of all colors were in bloom, and the girl picked as many as her heart desired. Meanwhile the ogre hurried on his way, and although he had to cross the thorns, he arrived at the house before Little Red Hat. He went inside, killed the grandmother, ate her up, and climbed into her bed. He also tied her intestine onto the door in place of the latch string and placed her blood, teeth, and jaws in the kitchen cupboard.

He had barely climbed into bed when Little Red Hat arrived and knocked at the door.

"Come in" called the ogre with a dampened voice.

Little Red Hat tried to open the door, but when she noticed that she was pulling on something soft, she called out, "Grandmother, this thing is so soft!"

"Just pull and keep quiet. It is your grandmother's intestine!"

"What did you say?"

"Just pull and keep quiet!"

Little Red Hat opened the door, went inside, and said, "Grandmother, I am hungry."

The ogre replied, "Go to the kitchen cupboard. There is still a little rice there."

Little Red Hat went to the cupboard and took the teeth out. "Grandmother, these things are very hard!"

"Eat and keep quiet. They are your grandmother's teeth!"

"What did you say?"

"Eat and keep quiet!"

A little while later Little Red Hat said, "Grandmother, I'm still hungry."

"Go back to the cupboard," said the ogre. "You will find two pieces of chopped meat there."

Little Red Hat went to the cupboard and took out the jaws. "Grandmother, this is very red!"

"Eat and keep quiet. They are your grandmother's jaws!"

"What did you say?"

"Eat and keep quiet!"

A little while later Little Red Hat said, "Grandmother, I'm thirsty."

"Just look in the cupboard," said the ogre. "There must be a little wine there."

Little Red Hat went to the cupboard and took out the blood. "Grandmother, this wine is very red!"

"Drink and keep quiet. It is your grandmother's blood!

"What did you say?"

"Just drink and keep quiet!"

A little while later Little Red Hat said, "Grandmother, I'm sleepy."

"Take off your clothes and get into bed with me!" replied the ogre.

Little Red Hat got into bed and noticed something hairy. "Grandmother, you are so hairy!"

"That comes with age," said the ogre.

"Grandmother, you have such long legs!"

"That comes from walking."

"Grandmother, you have such long hands!"

"That comes from working."

"Grandmother, you have such long ears!"

"That comes from listening."

"Grandmother, you have such a big mouth!"

"That comes from eating children!" said the ogre, and bam, he swallowed Little Red Hat with one gulp.

I love this Fear idea for many reasons. As for its name, this is just my opinion, but I think the name of the vanilla Fear should be "The Red Cap" as alliterator suggested (because that is a really nice name! :D), and.. well, every story can always come up with a better name if it wants. That's the joy of a mythos with no canon. Look at The Grotesque: It's been in a number of stories by now, and very few have actually called it The Grotesque. xD

a few things from the skype chat:

- The Dying Man's nickname is now "Skittles."

- Red is Grey's mom.

- Red is a mother to all the Dying Man pieces.

- Red, Grey... notice a color scheme developing here? (; ALL THE RAINBOWS!

- There may be a Blue and he is the father of The Dying Man.

I love you Red, you make the Fear Mythos so much more fun! X] Better mother than my own mother!
