> Let's go help newts.

Also, discreetly hit on him while we're in the sewers. Nothing brings out the romance like virtual cisterns. <3

Actually, you're a little offended that Newts hasn't tried to hit you up for a sexy chat in the past. He's apparently notorious for that, but you sure as hell haven't noticed.

Not that you want Newts to hit on you, just...what, your avatar isn't pretty enough for him? Is that it?

As you enter the sewers (no loading screens, thank god for that), Knifebaby starts responding to your message, as well.

Knifebaby: What quest?

"Depends on what everyone wants to work on, I guess?" you respond, and start looking for Newts. You mentally open your mini-map and search for the little blue dot - your party members are in blue, general players in yellow, enemies in red.

Knifebaby: I can meet you. Where are you right now?

You sigh a little. "Meeting up with Newts."

Knifebaby: Oh. I'll find you when Whiteflower is free, too.

You expected that.

"Hey, Newts!" you approach the figure currently plucking crystals out of the mucked-over walls.

Newts has a pretty badass avatar, in your opinion. He spent a good chunk of quest gold on dyes to make his robes black, metal boots, pauldrons, and cowl all highlighted with green. The armor for mages is a bit garish, without customization.

"You're looking especially rugged and sexy today," you greet him. "You know. For a mage."

So, that wasn't exactly discrete, but...you don't do discrete very well.

Newts: Bite me.

"Want me to?"

Newts: You're so charming.

"You know, Newts," you start farming the crystals, "I would have like, hundreds of your babies."

Newts: : |

Uh oh. He's regressed to emoticons.

Whenever he does that, he sticks to them for ages. Pretty much until he logs off, really.

You get another notice - Hellblazer just came online.

"Hey, Blazer. Quests?"

Hellblazer: Fuck. Yes. Need to kill something. NOW.

Oh, good, he's pissed. He games much better when he's pissed.

Hellblazer: Messaged others. Meeting in The Forsaken Square.

"Got it."

You check your inventory and find you have four teleportation spheres. You could head there without them, but since The Square is a main location, you could also just teleport there.

> Save the spheres and take the scenic route.

Newts is out of spheres, anyway, so this way you head back topside with him.

You get chat requests thrown your way several times, but you ignore them all. You know they'll all be requests for heals, or worse. It was irritating the first time it happened, but after the tenth and twentieth times, you lost all your patience for that.

Hellblazer: WHAT THE FUCK IS TAKING YOU SO LONG.

Okay, he had a really bad day.

The Forsaken Square is the main gathering area - essentially, the 'heart' of the city. As usual, it's bustling, making the name entirely wrong.

Your companions are already all there, waiting. The VR headset lets their avatar's expressions mimic their real-life ones...and you were right. Hellblazer had a very bad day, and is glowering at you.

Blazer is your unofficial leader. He doesn't have as much time for gaming as the rest of you, but when he does, he games hard. He's got a pretty sweet avatar, too, black armor over red, and deep red goggles decorated with spikes, which match the face mask he's got on. He looks a little like some cross between something from the Victorian era and a classic berserker. The choice of wild, black hairstyle kind of makes the 'feral' look.

Gunmetal is all grey. You've never seen his avatar's face. He's huge, though - he must have maxed out the height and width, to make a character that big. Hey, you guess he's your tank character for a reason.

Whiteflower, in contrast, probably put her height and weight at the most petite possible. A little redhead in robes, the character armor for sale really doesn't...well, suit her. For one, the skirt and stockings haven't been an innocent look since, what, the fifties? You don't know for sure, you weren't alive back then. She keeps healing and buffing everyone who walks past.

Then... There's Knifebaby. She irritates you, a little.

Not that her dominatrix avatar isn't hot, and all, but avatars like that are the reason yours keeps being hit on. There's also the fact that she doesn't seem to agree with you on anything, despite thinking she's your 'best friend'.

You think she might be a guy, in real life. You just get that vibe.

Hellblazer: ABOUT TIME. I need to stab things in the face.

Your available quests are as follows:

Picking Up Pieces.

A Little Birdie Told Me.

Locking Doors.

They all give about the same experience.

Any preferences?

Picking Up Pieces: Throughout the town, there are monsters masquerading as people. Kill 5 of them and bring proof back to Freya.

'Freya' was the NPC who gave out the quest, also found in The Square. Sounds simple enough!

Hellblazer: I'm all for that. I want to stab things.

"Alright, awesome. Shift to quest mode?"

Newts: : )

You select the quest.

Immediately, the area seems less cluttered. Only NPCs are left - the other players are invisible to you. It ensures they can't come out of nowhere and attack you, unless you're in a PVP zone.

How are you going to start looking?

Ask the others who might be masquerading as monsters, and what sort of penalties we might accrue if we accidentally murder an innocent npc.

"Anyone have any ideas what'll happen if we kill a regular NPC?" you question.

Gunmetal: We probably fail the quest.

Knifebaby: If we're LUCKY. They might all kill us.

As is typical of Baby, she seems to be arguing for the sake of arguing. You know she really dislikes Gun, in particular.

Hellblazer: We probably just get kicked from the quest. Which will piss me the fuck off, but I'll deal with it.

Gunmetal: I think the only way to tell will be to talk to them. They'll probably just attack if they're a monster.
Gunmetal: Thanks, Flower.

Whiteflower has started casting various buffing spells on you all. Hers are lower level than yours, but she has better ones - haste, power boosts, defense boosts. You pretty much just have cleansing spells and auto-heals.

You head over to an NPC.

For the most part, all NPCs look the same - shadows over their faces, the females sometimes wearing veils, everyone in blacks and greys. Really, to get any splash of color, you have to dye your own wardrobe; the city is pretty washed-out, too.

Maybe that's something they can improve upon, you muse. The virtual reality is great, but having something more interesting to look at would be nice.

Aside from your fellow gamers' avatars, obviously.

"Excuse me," you speak to the NPC woman, who turns towards you; a sign that she's been engaged.

"Hello," she greets, and you resist the urge to grimace - that's another thing you'd improve. You'd have them remove the hollow quality to the NPC voices. "Have you seen my daughter?"

Hellblazer: Generic NPC. Don't talk to her more, we'll get that quest later.

You head past that NPC to go speak to the next visible one.

The moment you speak to him, he rounds on you...and contorts.

He's turned into a shambling, zombie-like monster, and you have the misfortune of being closest.
